The Red Pen, a global educational consultancy, has launched a new AI tool named Ink Narrative Kit, also known as INK, to help students work on their essays for undergraduate, postgraduate, and MBA applications.

With India emerging as one of the largest source markets for international students, seeing a growth of over 50% in the last five years in outbound student mobility, the tool aims to enhance the applications from this ever-growing cohort.

The tool will allow the students to brainstorm ideas, organise drafts, receive real-time assistance and quick feedback, while also enabling them to express their academic, professional, and personal achievements, according to a statement by The Red Pen.

The AI tool has been built with insights from hundreds of applications reviewed by the consultancy and admissions professionals.

“INK follows international and Indian university policies to support students. It blends cutting-edge technology and ethical practices to help students articulate themselves,” read the statement.

“We are committed to enhancing the college application process for students worldwide,” said Kimberly Dixit, CEO and co-founder, The Red Pen.

“INK offers a comprehensive, ethical solution that empowers students to write impactful essays. It is ideal for those who are independently applying to undergraduate, postgraduate, or MBA programmes but want specific guidance for their essays.”

With AI tools often leading to perceptions of over-dependence on technology and plagiarism, it’s also important for education stakeholders to maintain ethical integrity.

While asserting that INK will help align a student’s essay with the expectations of their target institution, Namita Mehta, president of The Red Pen, explained that it is not designed to create the entire essay from scratch.

“INK complies with university AI policies. It will help you ideate, structure and revise your essays, aligning them with the expectations of your target institution. But it will never write your essay like other available AI tools,” said Mehta.

The tool has a range of subscription options, which include a free tier and one that offers advanced plans if students are looking for more features.
